Why Play for Pets?

In June 2024, Second Avenue Commons (2AC) suffered a catastrophic fire that displaced 180 individuals, 9 dogs and 1 cat. 2AC is one of very few homeless shelters in Allegheny County that accept people's pets.

In a time of crisis, having your pet is critical to your social, emotional and mental well-being.

Our pets are our family and show us unconditional love. Let's return the favor by taking care of them.

As the shelter and apartments are set to reopen in November, this fundraiser will support the needs of the pets in the shelter.

In particular, the funds raised will support the following:

  • Cat and dog crates (pets must be kept in crates in the shelter)

  • Muzzles (for safety, dogs must wear muzzles in the shelter)

  • Leashes

  • Pet beds (pets need beds too!)

  • Pet food, treats, and toys

  • Flea and tick preventatives

"Doing Good" is more than just a mantra, it's the foundation of my 14 year career in Pittsburgh. I started in Pittsburgh serving in AmeriCorps (three times) working my way through nonprofits, local government and healthcare sectors related to affordable housing and homelessness. It's why when I was named as one of Pittsburgh Magazine's 40 under 40 this year, I decided to utilize this honor to "do good" for the community and help others. And...let's be honest, I'm a huge pet lover with my German Shepherd-Border Collie dog "Chase", my beloved cat "Monkey", and my ferrets Jack & Oona.

With 2AC re-opening in November, it was a perfect confluence of timing and opportunity.

Please join me in supporting the pets and their owners as they come back to 2AC and the future pets and their owners who will utilize the shelter in the months and years ahead.

Our furry friends depend on us for love, care, and support. Together, we can make a difference in their lives and create a brighter future for pets in need.

Join us on November 13th
